Day 14- Kinkakuji temple, Nijo castle & Arashiyama

I dragged myself out of bed today in order to leave to go to Kinkakuji temple, (bear in mind I went to bed at 1:30), with Anna at 9.

We stepped out of the hostel and it was chucking it down, thank god I bought an umbrella yesterday because the hostel didn't have any.

The temple was beautiful, there were so many tourists though and it was chucking it down, so I wasn't able to get many photos.

We got out of there relatively quickly because it was just too busy, instead we headed towards some more temples. These were much nicer because they were much more secluded.

We then headed towards Nijo castle hoping it was open today. Before going in, we decided to get some lunch, we managed to find this tiny little restaurant with only local people in there, they didn't have an English menu so we took that as a good sign. We ordered a couple of things and shared them.

This is what the owner recommended, it was egg and chicken with rice and noodles in miso soup. It was really tasty.

We also ordered this. It was cold noodles with a wasabi & soy type sauce with tempura. It was delicious.

After lunch we went into the castle, it was so beautiful.

After looking around the castle, we decided to go to Arashiyama, where the bamboo walk is. On our way Anna felt like something sweet so we stopped and out 2 kinds of jellies. We had no idea what they were when we bought them, but when we opened them, surprise surprise, one was red bean, the other plum. Only the 2 most common flavours in Japan. The red bean one had a slightly odd texture but the plum one was amazing.

We got to the bamboo place around 5 so the temple was shut, we still got to see this really strange face on the wall.

After briefly seeing the temple, we went to the bridge. The water was so rough and there was a layer of fog just above the water.

We eventually got to the bamboo walk and it was amazing. We didn't walk for very long because it was still really wet and the mosquito's were attacking us.

We found this enormous worm, it was longer than Anna's foot.

After the bamboo trail, we headed back to the hostel, getting there just after 7. I caught up on the blog    post that I didn't write yesterday :/ and chatted with a guy who works at the hostel.

Anna and I went out for dinner around 10. We found a great little restaurant and shared a bunch of  things.

Bamboo shoots soaked in soy and stuff.

Beef in chilli oil, so tasty but so fatty.

Gyoza's

Rice

After, we headed back to the hostel and chilled in the common room for a bit. It's been a good day, now I'm off to bed.
